Phyllis S Barnes

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 1, 2015 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL, with Rev. Kevin Ray officiating. Visitation will be 9:00-11:00 a.m. Monday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Shelbyville Education Foundation or Donor’s Choice.
Mrs. Barnes was born on August 2, 1919 in rural Gays, Illinois, the daughter of Wilbur O. and Mary E. Ross Storm. She graduated from Windsor High School in the Class of 1937. She worked for Hulman & Company in Mattoon, IL following high school. Phyllis continued her education at the University of Illinois, graduating from the College of Business in 1942. Later that year, she began teaching at Gays High School. In 1960 she started teaching at Shelbyville High School, where she was a typing instructor until her retirement in 1984. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Shelbyville, IL, Illinois Retired Teachers Association and the China Painters Group of Mattoon, IL. Phyllis also kept the farm management books for the Farm Bureau. She married LeRoy Edwin Barnes on December 25, 1942 in Gays, IL. He died on June 1, 1982.
She is survived by her sons, David Barnes and wife Cathy of Gays, IL and Paul Barnes and wife Pege of Shelbyville, IL; sister-in-law, Dolores Storm of Shelbyville, IL; and two grandchildren, William “Buck” Barnes of Arcola, IL and Rebecca Ritz and husband Ben of Fort Branch, IN.
She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Harry McCord; husband, Leroy Barnes; and brother, Lud Storm.
