Rev. Thomas J Compton

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 7, 2018 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL. Visitation will be Thursday, December 6, 2018 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be given to the Preachers Aid Society or American Heart Association.
Rev. Compton was born on December 9, 1948 in Decatur, IL, the son of Frank Ainsworth and Juanita Juvae (Sain) Compton. He graduated from Shelbyville High School the Class of 1967, and went on to earn degrees from Western Illinois University and Evangelical Theological Seminary in Naperville, IL. He married Christine Schouten in Shelbyville, IL on August 7, 1971. Their first full-time ministry charge in the United Methodist Church was in White Hall, followed by two churches in Jacksonville; Ebenezer and Wesley Chapel. While in Jacksonville, the couple also worked with deaf ministry. In the 1990s, the Comptons served at the Hillsboro United Methodist Church, before his final charge in Assumption and Findlay in 2001. Rev. Compton retired in 2013 after more than 30 years of service. He was a member of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference of the United Methodist Church. Rev. Compton was an avid Green Bay Packers fan and enjoyed gardening, spending time with his family and collecting nativity scenes and Campbell’s Soup memorabilia.
He is survived by his wife, Chris of Pana, IL; sons, Kurt Compton (Tiffney) of Witt, IL and Karl Compton (Carly) of Findlay, IL; daughter, Kendra Finley (Chris) of Ramsey, IL; parents, Frank and Juanita Compton of Lakewood, IL; brothers, David Compton (June) of Tower Hill, IL, Charles “Chuck” Compton (Kathy) of Shelbyville, IL, and Steve Compton (Carol) of Shelbyville, IL; eight grandchildren, Vanessa Compton, Sierra Compton, Alexa Compton, Wyatt Daniels, Lilly Compton, Melody Finley, Gabriel Finley, and Thomas Finley.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Clyde and Clara Compton; and his maternal grandparents, Firth and Susan Sain.
