Robert John Dort
(June 17, 1933 – January 14, 2013)
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 19, 2013 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville with Rev. Mark Sanders officiating. Casual attire is requested. Visitation will be from 9:30 – 10:30 am Saturday with Masonic rites at 10:30 a.m. by Jackson Masonic Lodge #53 of Shelbyville. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Memorials may be given to the Shriner’s Hospitals for Children or Lincolnland Hospice.
Mr. Dort was born on June 17, 1933 in rural Clarksburg, IL, the son of Herbert Franklin and Rosetta Strohl Dort. He was raised on the farm by his grandparents, Jack and Josie Strohl. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in the Class of 1951. He then served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. When he returned home from the service he was a mechanic for the Mobile Service Station in Shelbyville. He then worked for Caterpillar in Decatur until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of Jackson Masonic Lodge #53 of Shelbyville, Springfield Consistory, Ansar Shrine, Shelby County Shriners, Ansar Safety Squad, Moose Lodge #1294 of Shelbyville and Roy Vanderpool American Legion Post #81 of Shelbyville. He married June J. Walden Helton on October 2, 1959. She preceded him in death on March 8, 2008.
He is survived by his step-son, Ronald L Helton and wife Lois of Shelbyville; sister, Ruth Lebshire of Taylorville; half-sister, Jeanne Benson of Kankakee; grandchildren, Leslie A. Fathauer, Jesse M. Helton and wife Gwyn and Daniel L. Helton and wife Dena all of Shelbyville; great grandchildren, Justin Fathauer and wife Monica, Chelsea Wildman and husband Rodney, Zachary Helton, Aurora Poulos and husband Drew, Bailee Helton, Courtland Helton and wife Jaide, Alexis Helton and friend Scott Welton, and Cade Helton; great great grandchildren, Cailynn Elam, Jesse Helton, Bryce Fathauer, Bodee Fathauer, Jasmine Wildman, Natilee Wildman and Marley Welton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, June Dort; sister, Carole Swinhart; and grandson-in-law, David Fathauer.
