Roy C Shuff

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2013 in the First United Methodist Church of Shelbyville with Rev. Dan Seibert, Dr. Bruce Owens and Dr. David Middleton officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. Monday and 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Tuesday both in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville. Masonic rites will be held at 7:00 p.m. Monday in the funeral home by Jackson Masonic Lodge #53 of Shelbyville. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville. Memorials may be given to Cancer Care Specialists of Central Illinois in Decatur, Lincolnland Hospice, Save Our Chautauqua Fund, or the First United Methodist Church Parsonage Fund.
Mr. Shuff was born on September 29, 1940 in Dugout, near Shelbyville, IL, the son of Edgar C. and Retta B. Osborn Shuff. He graduated from Shelbyville High School in the Class of 1958 and attended Sparks Business College in Shelbyville. He married Marilyn J. Frakes on January 14, 1962 in the First Christian Church of Vandalia, IL. Roy began working at Gene & Barney’s in Shelbyville. He later worked for El Bauer Chevrolet in Decatur, IL and then Prudential Insurance Company in Springfield, IL. He returned to Shelbyville and purchased the Earl Riley Insurance Agency in 1977, which later became Shelbyville Insurance Services Inc., with partners Harry Russell, Dutch Firnhaber and Randy Biehler. Roy retired from the insurance agency in 2006 and then worked for Grabb Motors in Shelbyville.
Roy was a member of the Jackson Masonic Lodge #53 of Shelbyville, Ansar Shrine of Springfield, Shelby County Shrine Club, Greater Shelbyville Area Chamber of Commerce, Shelby Memorial Hospital Board of Directors serving as their President, First United Methodist Church serving on the Trustees and Finance Committee, and Moose Lodge #1294 of Shelbyville. He also served on the Shelby County Economic Development Committee and the Chautauqua Committee in Shelbyville. Roy enjoyed helping with the 4th of July Celebrations in Shelbyville and collected money for the fireworks. He also helped collect money for the Shriners through their coloring books.
Roy was elected the Mayor of Shelbyville in 2007 and served in this capacity until his death. While Roy was Mayor, the City of Shelbyville had many accomplishments, including the retention of International Paper, the opening of the Chapala Mexican Grill and the Downtown Streetscape Project. Roy enjoyed the Sister City Program with Okuwa, Japan and was a part of the Shelbyville delegation that traveled to Japan in 2008. Roy truly loved the City of Shelbyville and its people and took great pride in serving them.
Roy loved to play and watch every sport, with the exception of golf. When playing, he was a fierce competitor. Roy played on the Shelbyville Merchants fast pitch softball team for many years. He was a die-hard fan of the Illini, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Bears and USAC Open Wheel Racing. Roy took great pride and supported all of the interests of his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; twin sons, Troy and Terry Shuff both of Shelbyville; daughters, Tracie Helton and husband Patrick and Tami Shuff all of Shelbyville; and four grandchildren, Charlie Shuff of Shelbyville, Jennifer Shuff of Charleston and her boyfriend Mike Boring, Hilary Shuff of Tower Hill and Sydnie Helton of Shelbyville. His beloved dogs Maggie, Molly and Dhasi will miss him greatly.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Raymond Fulte and Arthur Glen Shuff; and sister, Letha Fulte.
The family would like to thank Dr. Perry Guaglianone, Dr. Sebastian Kairouz, Dr. Marianne DePaz, the Nursing Staff of Cancer Care Specialists of Central Illinois in Decatur, Decatur Memorial Hospital 5100 Floor, Shelby Memorial Hospital and Lincolnland Hospice for their loving care.
