Royce D Compton
(December 14, 1920 – January 24, 2014)
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 15, 2014 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery, near Clarksburg, IL with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Memorials may be given to the Shelby County Honor Guard.
Mr. Compton was born on December 14, 1920 in Shelbyville, IL, the son of Leverett A. and Della Grace Devore Compton. He was a U. S. Army veteran of WW II, serving in Africa, Italy and France, and received the Purple Heart Medal. Royce was a grain and livestock farmer in the Clarksburg area and also served as the Clarksburg Twp. Road Commissioner for many years. He enjoyed raising and riding American Quarter Horses. He was a member of the Cutting Horse Association and participated in Team Penning. He married Charlotte Lavonne Owens on November 18, 1945. She preceded him in death on November 16, 2008.
He is survived by his sons, Alan Compton and wife Jill of Normal, IL and Glen Compton and wife Marlene of Winthrop Harbor, IL; son-in-law, William “Bill” Howard of Shelbyville, IL; brother, Paul Compton and wife Mary Katherine of Shelbyville, IL; five grandchildren, Aaron Compton, Ashley Compton Richard, Laura Lampert, Blake Compton and Courtney Ward; and five great grandchildren, Nolan Lampert, Jaden Compton, Asher Compton, Charlie Lampert and Ellie Ward.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lavonne; daughter, Donna Howard; brother, Arnold Compton; and sisters, Elva Compton, June Roley, Eula Shattuck, Aileen Hoagland and Helen Dishman.
