Ruth E Sater

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2013 in Howe Cemetery, near Shelbyville, IL with the Rev. Dan Eloe officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Saturday in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association and Disabled American Veterans.
Ruth was born on January 13, 1923 in Westervelt, IL, the daughter of Charles H. and Amy Amanda Smith. Ruth went to work in Rockford, IL in the World War II years at Drop Forge where she forged metals to support the military. She met Donald B. Sater in 1944 in Rockford and they married in the spring of 1945. Their son, Stanley Ray, was born in the winter of 1946. Donald, Ruth and Stanley moved to Rantoul, IL to pursue a business venture in Yellow Cabs with Ruth’s brother, Ted. In 1952 Ruth and Stanley moved to Decatur, IL where Ruth became employed with the Borg Warner plant. She met Thomas Morrison there and they later married.
Ruth enjoyed going to the ball parks as well as watching her favorite team, the Chicago White Sox, on TV. She also enjoyed being out visiting with her friends as well as shopping. She enjoyed her swing band music as well as the early country greats. She would go the parks to listen to music events. Ruth was very patriotic and loved keeping busy as an election volunteer. She would also support the servicemen by sending core packages. She received a flag for her patriotism that was flown in Afghanistan. That flag flies today in front of Stanley’s home in Minnesota. Ruth enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren through photographs and visits to Minnesota. After trying the move to Minnesota three times, she always had a longing for the “hills and hollers” of Shelbyville, IL and would always return to Illinois where she considered home. She was a member of the Herrick Baptist Church.
She is survived by her son, Stanley Ray Sater and wife Shirley of Jackson, MN; grandchildren, Chad and wife Sherri, Craig and Chris; step-grandchildren, Jason Hempsted and wife Vera and Phillip Nelson; great grandchildren, Britney, Courtney, Trent, Jesyka, Starlite, Jessica, Zachary and Riley; and eight great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Clifford B., William Don “Bill”, Howard and Theodore; four sisters, Esther Ragan, Goldie Galvin, Irene Bishop and Margaret Forcum; and her spouses, Donald Sater and Thomas Morrison.
