Shirley L. White, 87, of Shelbyville, IL, died at 10:49 a.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2014 in Shelbyville Manor.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 16, 2014 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL with Rev. Kevin Ray officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be given to the First Christian Church of Shelbyville, IL.

Shirley was born on October 16, 1926 in Sullivan, IL, the daughter of Lyle D. and Alice Vivian Harsh Poland. She began working in Decatur during WW II in the war effort. Shirley then worked for General Electric and Gallery of Homes in Decatur and Sta-Rite Ginnie Lou, Inc. and Shelby Co. Treasurer’s Office both in Shelbyville. Later she worked with her husband at White’s Sheet Metal in Shelbyville. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Shelbyville, Eastern Star, White Shrine of Jerusalem and Beta Sigma Phi. She loved cooking and enjoyed duplicating things she had tried and liked. She was an avid follower of the stock market and formed an investment club that spanned three generations. Shirley liked to knit and crochet. She volunteered her time to knit bandages to be sent overseas and to crochet afghans for babies for the Crisis Pregnancy Center. She married David R. White on October 13, 1945. He died on February 19, 2014.

She is survived by her son, David Michael White and wife Joni of Shelbyville; daughters, Marsha Ellen White of Shelbyville, Marla Elaine Firnhaber and husband Dutch of Shelbyville, and Leslie Alice Beckett and husband Kevin of Ivesdale, IL; grandchildren, Martha Firnhaber, Erica Firnhaber, Matthew Firnhaber and wife Shonna, Heather Cloe and husband Matt, Tara White, and Jef White; and great grandchildren, Caine Cloe, Jensen Cloe, Caleb Cloe, Hannah Firnhaber, Kelby Firnhaber, Parker Firnhaber, Phoenix Firnhaber, Obadiah Kaiser, and Abigail Kaiser.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, David; and brothers, Stanley Devere Poland and Ronald K. Poland.
