Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 11, 2017 in Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL with Pastor Thomas Suey officiating. Visitation from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Shelbyville, IL with military rites by the Shelby County Honor Guard. Memorials may be given to Christ Tabernacle Building Fund, Wounded Warrior Project or Shelbyville Public Library.
Mr. Donnel was born on July 13, 1912 in Shelby Co., IL, the son of Charles Henry and Minnie Drucilla (Salmons) Donnel. He graduated from Westervelt Community High School in the Class of 1930. He began farming with horses in the Westervelt area and bought his first tractor in 1936. Woodrow then entered the service and was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II, serving in the Solomon Islands Campaign (Guadalcanal). When Woodrow returned from the service, he resumed his farming career. He married Amerilla M. Manuel on February 4, 1944. They worked tirelessly on the family grain and livestock farm and raised their six children. He enjoyed raising Black Angus Cattle and Spotted Belgian Horses. In his younger days, he played in a band with his younger brother, Lester. He was a member of Christ Tabernacle Church in Herrick, IL, Shelby County Farm Bureau, The Black Angus Association, and was a former member of the Westervelt Christian Church.
He is survived by his sons, Gary Donnel (Pam) of Shelbyville, IL, Darryl Donnel (Julie) of Cypress, TX and Troy Donnel of Shelbyville, IL; daughters, Carolyn Sherwood (Sid) of Loudon, TN, Ginnie Moody of Dalton City, IL and Cathy Crane of Arlington, VA; sister-in-law, Imogene Donnel of Findlay, IL; six grandchildren, Rhonda Meismer (John), Melissa Moody, Chad Donnel (Dena), Michelle Moody, Brandi Hughes (Brandon) and Sarah Donnel; seven great grandchildren, Abby Donnel, Ashley Donnel, Dax Meismer, Haley Meismer, Sloan Plummer, Quinn Plummer, and Fallon Hughes; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Amerilla; parents; and brothers, Dale, Glen and Lester Donnel.
