Viola Whittington Fuller, 97, of Herrick, IL died at 7:10 a.m. Friday, July 14, 2017 in Heritage Health in Pana, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 19, 2017 in the Herrick Baptist Church, Herrick, IL with Pastor Jay Huddleston officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 a.m. Wednesday in the church. Burial will be in Myers Cemetery, north of Herrick, IL. Arrangements are by Howe & Yockey Funeral Home in Shelbyville, IL. Memorials may be given to the Herrick Baptist Church, Whittington Heritage Scholarship or donor’s choice.

Viola was born on April 8, 1920 in Herrick, IL, the daughter of Ray M. and Sarah Bennett Whittington. Viola graduated from Herrick High School with the Class of 1938 and later from Sparks Business College in Shelbyville, IL. She married Vernie L. Fuller in the First Baptist Church in Chicago, IL on April 21, 1943. She had a 33 year career as a supervisor for the Veterans Administration Regional Office in Chicago, IL. Three years after the death of her husband, Vernie, she returned to live on the Sesquicentennial Farm North of Herrick, IL, where she was born. Since her return to Herrick, she worked as a freelance court reporter for the Shelby County States Attorney, the former attorney Glenn Wright. Viola was very civic minded and was a hard working volunteer in many charitable organizations. She was a life member of the Baptist Church, Past Regent of Kuilka Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, Herrick Unit 19 of the Shelby County Home Extension, Past President of Herrick American Legion Auxiliary #839 and a member of NSDAR.

Viola was proud in the establishment of the Whittington Heritage Scholarship given annually to a graduating senior from Cowden-Herrick High School.

She is survived by her sisters, Ruth W. Lockart of Heritage Health, Pana, IL and Helen W. Maxwell of Mason Point, Sullivan, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernie; brother, Russell O. Whittington (Norma); sister, Naomi Whittington Harrison (Lowell); nephew, Joseph R. Whittington (killed in Vietnam); and nieces, Carol Ann Whittington Rose and Sandra R. Maxwell Ingram.

Viola’s treasure in life was her personal relationship with her Lord Jesus Christ and her love for her family.
