Jim was born and raised in Milmine, IL, the son of Cecil and Mary Yockey. He was a 1956 graduate of Bement High School. Jim then attended EIU in Charleston, IL, before graduating from Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago, IL. He married Judy A. Weibel on December 23, 1960. He began his career at Waddington Funeral Home in Tuscola, IL. In 1970, he became a partner at Howe and Yockey Funeral Home in Shelbyville, IL. Jim, his family, and right-hand man Junior Evans operated Howe and Yockey Funeral Homes in Shelbyville and Strasburg, IL for nearly 50 years until the time of Jim’s passing in December of 2019. His son Jack Yockey and grandson Neil Yockey and their families will continue to serve the community through the funeral profession for years to come.
Jack was born and raised in Shelbyville, IL, the son of Jim and Judy Yockey. He is a 1981 graduate of Shelbyville High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, IL. Jack then graduated from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1986 and returned home to Shelbyville to serve his apprenticeship with his father at Howe and Yockey Funeral Home, Shelbyville, IL. Jack married Robin R. McHenry on October 18, 1986. Jim and Jack co-owned and operated Howe and Yockey Funeral Homes, Ltd. in Shelbyville and Strasburg for 33 years, until Jim’s passing in December of 2019.
Neil was born and raised in Shelbyville, IL, the son of Jack and Robin Yockey. He is a 2013 graduate of Shelbyville High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from Murray State University in Murray, KY. Neil married Ashley D. Tabb on June 10, 2017. Neil returned home in May of 2019 to work alongside his grandfather, Jim, and his father, Jack. Neil graduated from the DMACC Mortuary Science Program in 2020 and served his apprenticeship with his father at Howe & Yockey Funeral Home.
